A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A SWINE BREEDING LEAD
As the Swine Breeding Lead at our sow farm, you play a very important part in our success as a quality pork producer through your excellent management of the daily operations of our breeding department. You are responsible for overseeing the maintenance of breeding and farrowing targets, our daily artificial insemination (AI) breeding program, semen inventory, semen delivery, our health and vaccination program, livestock nutrition, the isolation and acclimation of replacement gilts, and record-keeping. You are responsible for the cleanliness and safety of our sow farm and are well versed on all biosecurity rules and practices associated with livestock farming.
You love that you get to work in an agricultural environment where you have continuous hands-on interaction with livestock. You are a can-do, get-it-done person who enjoys going about your regular structured routines to make sure that everything is done right. You ensure that cleaning, power-washing, and disinfection processes are carried out properly and regularly.
You are also goal-oriented and lead your department in meeting production and financial targets. You enjoy agriculture and its relationship to quality pork production.
Ensuring the health and well-being of all our livestock in terms of nutrition, medication, and environment is really important to you! You monitor and coordinate the breeding schedule and take responsibility for the quality of all the sows and gilts sent to farrowing.
In addition to your interest in pork production, you are mechanically-inclined which comes in handy as you diagnose the malfunctions of farming equipment and perform necessary mechanical repairs and maintenance as needed. Your people skills also come in handy as you motivate your team to perform their daily tasks well, providing them with helpful training and feedback. Thankfully, you don’t have to sit at a desk all day to ensure quality pork production but you are careful about keeping necessary forms and reports up-to-date and accurate.
